Wrexham Industrial Estate
A directory of 98 businesses on Wales's largest industrial estate, sorted by sector, with how to get there and what it is like to work there.
About the estate
Wrexham Industrial Estate covers around 550 hectares about 3 miles east of Wrexham city centre, on the way to Holt. It is the largest industrial estate in Wales and is usually described as the second largest in the UK after Trafford Park in Manchester. More than 340 businesses are based here, employing around 10,000 people.
From munitions factory to manufacturing hub
The estate began life during the Second World War as ROF Wrexham, a Royal Ordnance Factory making cordite, the propellant used in shells. The site was chosen for its distance from German bomber bases, its rail links and its supply of workers, and at its peak around 13,000 people worked there. Production stopped in 1945.
After the war the land was turned over to industry. British Celanese opened an acetate yarn factory in the 1950s and built Redwither Tower, still the largest office building on the estate. Firestone, Owens Corning and BICC Cables followed, and in the late 1970s came two of today's biggest names, Kellogg's and JCB. A £30 million pair of new access roads opened in 2012.
The estate today
Food and drink, pharmaceuticals, advanced materials and logistics are the big sectors. Kellogg's, Village Bakery and Oscar Mayer make the estate one of the biggest food production centres in Wales. Ipsen and Wockhardt manufacture medicines, Hoya makes spectacle lenses, Syensqo makes composite materials for aerospace, and Prysmian makes cables for offshore wind farms. Alongside them are hundreds of smaller engineering firms, garages, packaging makers and trade counters.
Investment
In 2024 Kellanova, the owner of Kellogg's, announced a £75 million investment to move Corn Flakes and Crunchy Nut production to Wrexham from Trafford Park, which is due to close towards the end of 2026. The plan adds at least 130 jobs and will more than double the site's cereal output.
The estate is also one of three tax sites in the Flintshire and Wrexham Investment Zone, a £160 million UK Government-backed programme formally approved in December 2025 to grow advanced manufacturing. The stated aims are more than 6,000 jobs and around £1 billion of private investment over the life of the scheme. FI Real Estate Management, one of the estate's largest landlords, is building new industrial space here, including its Wrexham 1M and Wrexham 152 schemes.
HMP Berwyn
HMP Berwyn opened on the former Firestone site in 2017. It is a category C prison for men with capacity for 2,106 people, the largest prison in the UK, and a major employer in its own right.
Getting there
By car: the estate is about 3 miles east of the city centre. From the A483 Wrexham bypass, follow the A534 Holt Road east and pick up the signs for the industrial estate. Most businesses have their own parking for staff and visitors, so check with the company you are visiting.
By bus: Arriva's service 41 runs between Wrexham bus station and the industrial estate from Monday to Saturday, with roughly half-hourly buses at the start and end of the working day. Timetables change, so check Traveline Cymru before you travel. See our buses and trains guide for more on getting around Wrexham.
By train: the nearest stations are Wrexham General and Wrexham Central, both in the city centre. From there you will need the bus or a taxi.
Working on the estate
With around 10,000 jobs, the estate is the biggest single concentration of employment in the Wrexham area. Many of the food, pharmaceutical and logistics sites run around the clock, so shift work (early, late, night and continental patterns) is common, especially in production and warehousing. Office, engineering, technical and management roles are usually on day hours.
Several recruitment agencies have offices on the estate, including 24-7 Recruitment Services and Adapt Recruitment at Blackwood Business Park, and many large employers advertise directly on their own careers pages. If you are thinking of setting up or expanding a business here, Wrexham Council's business and investment support team is a good first call.
