Taxis in Wrexham

The difference between a taxi you can hail and one you have to book, how to check it's licensed, and who to tell if something's wrong.Last checked October 2026

Two kinds of taxi

Hackney carriages

Can be hailed or picked up at a rank

Illuminated TAXI sign on the roof and a plate on the back

Private hire

Must be booked in advance

Yellow signs in the rear windows. You can't flag one down in the street.

Both are licensed by Wrexham County Borough Council. If a private hire driver offers you a ride without a booking, say no and report it.

How to spot a licensed taxi

  1. Look for the white and purple licence plate on the vehicle.
  2. Check the driver is wearing or carrying a photo ID badge issued by the council.
  3. For a hackney carriage, look for the illuminated TAXI roof sign. For private hire, make sure you booked it and the yellow rear signs are showing.

Where to find one

The main hackney carriage rank is on King Street, next to the bus station. Remember the city centre pedestrian zone is closed to vehicles, including taxis, between 11.30am and 6am, so arrange pick-ups outside the zone.

Raising a concern
